Look inside the notebook
Here's exactly what Dad gets. Every edition follows the same plan, with its own local jokes.
The first page. "This notebook belongs to," followed by: If found, please return. No questions asked. (Dad has a few questions.)
Dad's Rules for Dating My Daughter. A full page of house rules. Here are all 8 from the Original:
- Come to the front door and ring the bell. I'll be the one sharpening the hedge trimmers.
- I don't need to know where you're going. I already know.
- Her curfew is 22:00. Yours is whenever I say.
- Call me "Sir." Not "Dude." Never "Bro."
- The dog likes everyone. If the dog doesn't like you, neither do I.
- Lie to me and I'll find out. I'm a dad. It's my superpower.
- I own a shovel, I know a man with a wood chipper and a very large garden. Just so you know.
- Treat her well and we'll get along great.
The Boyfriend Evaluation Form. Name, what Dad calls him, vehicle, then the check boxes: handshake, eye contact, how he addressed Dad, and the dog's opinion. There's a verdict at the bottom.
The Alibi Log. Three columns: Date, Where I Was, Who Can Vouch for Me. For no particular reason. The city editions make it local: the Trailhead, Subway, Muni and Freeway Alibi Logs.
The rest of the notebook. 1/4-inch graph paper for whatever he likes, from deck plans to fantasy football drafts. The Original and Boulder County editions alternate graph paper with blank pages. Every page has a small joke at the bottom.
The size. 8.5 x 11 inch paperback, 100 pages.
